Tavern Burger Pizza

Writer's picture: Jonathan WilliamJonathan William

Makes 2 medium pizzas (about 12 to 14" each)

I came up with this recipe in honor of my brother. Growing up, he would always order a cheeseburger pizza at a local restaurant we would frequent. Following this restaurant trend, it only makes sense that cheeseburger pizzas are now forever popular on recipe sites and blogs.

Most of the interpretations, though, remain the same. Being the chef I am, I just had to find a way to bring you a fresh new take on this burger pizza trend. And that I did...

For one, this pizza is handsome to look at! With a visual in contrasting colors and textures. Ranging from the rustic dough, fresh veggies, and the craggy crispy rings, there is just so much for your eyes to enjoy.

Then the taste! Honestly, it is straight out of a hotspot high end burger joint. It just never ends - topped with an Easy Tavern Barbecue Sauce, sharp cheddar cheese, bacon, and a delicious slightly-smoky burger mix. Then once it's baked at a super high heat, it is topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, dill pickle chips, and my Chipotle Mayo Condiment. Finally, the whole thing is crowned with onion rings of royalty.

And THAT, my friends, is how you turn a basic cheeseburger pizza into Chef Jonathan William's Tavern Burger Pizza.

Recipe Notes: If you are using my pizza recipe (link below), plan to make the dough night before. Otherwise you can buy pre-made dough or pre-made crust. The burger mix can also be made and cooked off the night before you plan on serving the pizza.

Ingredients:

About 28 oz to 30 oz prepared pizza dough (If you want to make your own, Recipe Here)

Burger Mix (can be made the day before)

1 lb ground beef (80 to 85% fat)

1/4 cup ketchup

1/4 cup yellow mustard

1 1/2 tsp onion powder

1 tsp kosher salt

3/4 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp black pepper

Dash of cayenne pepper

Easy Tavern Barbecue Sauce

1 cup good quality barbecue sauce

1 Tbsp ale beer

1 Tbsp strong brewed coffee

Pizza Ingredients

12 oz good quality sharp/extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

6 oz cooked bacon slices, chopped (optional)

3/4 cup shredded lettuce

1/2 cup chopped tomatoes

1/4 cup kosher dill pickle chips

Directions:

First, prepare the Pizza Crust according to recipe link above if making your own.

Make Burger Mix: In a medium bowl, mix together the ground beef, ketchup, mustard, onion powder, salt, paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until thoroughly combined. Cook the burger mix in a skillet over medium heat until the beef is nicely browned - don't worry about fully cooking it, as it will be baked further on the pizza. Set aside. If prepping the day before, store the covered in the fridge until ready to use.

Make the Easy Tavern Barbecue Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the barbecue sauce, beer, and coffee. Set aside.

Preheat Oven & Pizza Stone: Place pizza stone on lowest rack in oven. Preheat oven with stone in the oven for at least 30 minutes before baking the pizza - it takes time for the stone to reach the same temperature as the oven - a cold stone will leave the crust soggy. Set oven to 500F degrees if you oven will reach that high. If it doesn't reach 500F degrees, set it as high as it can go.

Assemble Pizza: If using my pizza crust recipe, divide the dough into 2. Gently, stretch each dough out to a circle about 12" to 14" in diameter. On a floured pizza peel or floured sheet pan, place one of the stretched dough rounds. Spread 1/2 cup of the Easy Tavern Barbecue Sauce on the dough. Cover with about 4 oz of the shredded cheddar cheese. Place some of the beef mixture and half the bacon over the cheese, then cover with another 2 oz of cheese.

Slide the pizza off the floured pizza peel/sheet pan onto the preheated pizza stone. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, until the desired browning is achieved.

Remove from oven and transfer to serving/cutting board. Top with 1/2 the lettuce, tomato, and dill pickle chips. Drizzle or spoon some of the Chipotle Mayo Condiment over the top. Crown the pizza with Beer Battered Onion Rings.

SLICE, SERVE, AND ENJOY!
